Ingredients & Substitutions

Here is everything you need to make the best gluten free oat banana bread recipe:

Bananas: If you don’t have ripe bananas, you can substitute with applesauce for a similar sweetness and texture.

Maple Syrup: Honey or agave syrup works as a great alternative to maple syrup if you prefer or have them on hand.

Eggs: For a vegan option, replace the eggs with flax eggs (1 tablespoon of flaxseed meal mixed with 3 tablespoons of water per egg).

Olive Oil: You can swap out the extra light olive oil for coconut oil, avocado oil, or even melted butter for a richer flavor.

Greek Yogurt: Replace with any dairy-free yogurt or sour cream for a dairy-free version.

Oat Flour: If you don’t have oat flour, you can grind old-fashioned oats in a blender or use almond flour for a different texture.

Chocolate Chips: Dairy-free or dark chocolate chips can easily replace regular chocolate chips for a dairy-free or less sweet option.

How to Make My Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Oat Banana Bread Recipe

Step 1: Prep Your Pan and Oats

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a 4×8″ baking pan with parchment paper. Then spray lightly with non-stick cooking spray. If grinding your own oat flour, measure about 2-1/4 cups of oats and grind them in your blender. I love using my Nutribullet because it only takes about six seconds.

Step 2: Mash Your Bananas

You can either mash your bananas by hand with a fork on a plate or put them in a medium-sized mixing bowl with maple syrup, oil, vanilla, greek yogurt, and almond extract. Then blend them together until smooth using an immersion blender

If you mashed your bananas by hand, add the maple syrup, oil, vanilla, greek yogurt, and almond extract and mix with a whisk.

Expert Recipe Tips

Banana ripeness: The riper the bananas, the better. Look for bananas with plenty of brown spots for the sweetest flavor.

Overmixing: Be careful not to overmix the batter once you add the dry ingredients—this helps keep the banana bread light and fluffy.

Chocolate chip tip: Save a handful of chocolate chips to sprinkle on top before baking for that perfect chocolatey finish.

Delicious Serving Suggestions

  • Breakfast treat: Pair a slice of banana bread with your morning coffee or tea for a quick, satisfying breakfast.
  • Afternoon snack: Enjoy as a midday pick-me-up with a dollop of peanut butter or almond butter on top.
  • Dessert option: Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a cozy, delicious dessert.
  • Healthy brunch: Add this to your brunch spread alongside fresh fruit, yogurt, and granola.
  • Kids’ lunchbox: A perfect addition to your child’s lunchbox for a wholesome snack they’ll love.
  • Gift it: Bake a loaf as a thoughtful homemade gift for friends or family.
  • Special toppings: Drizzle with melted dark chocolate or a sprinkle of chopped nuts for extra texture and flavor.

Room temperature: Store the banana bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Refrigerate: If you want to keep it longer, store it in the fridge for up to a week. Just warm it up before serving.

Freeze: You can freeze slices by wrapping them individually in plastic wrap and storing them in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months. Thaw and enjoy!

Can I make this banana bread without eggs?

I made this today! Being honest, I generally do not like gluten-free recipes. At all. And I have a conventional banana bread chocolate chip recipe that has been a family favorite for years now. I made this today, and it was a hit with all four of my kids, as well as my parents who are visiting. I felt so good feeding this to my family! I doubled the recipe and baked it in a 13 x 9 pan for about 40 minutes. I have been struggling to find gluten-free options for myself that actually taste good, but this was amazing! Your recipes are giving me hope, thank you.

Hi Suzanne, I am honored you were willing to take a chance on my recipe! And I’m thrilled your family loves it as much as mine does. I actually had a loaf of this bread in the oven when I saw this comment! I’ve also had difficulty finding delicious gluten-free recipes, which inspired me to start this website. Please continue to share your feedback with me if you try more of my GF recipes. I want to make them taste as good as possible while being nutrient dense :).
